Profile of Goa Education

Goa is not only famous for tourism but also for the number of educational institutes that offer world class quality education for all. Goa is home to some of the best engineering and medical colleges of the country and it also has a branch of BITS Pilani. With a higher literacy rate (87.40%) as compared to the all India figures (74.04%), according to the 2011 Census Report.

School Education in Goa

Most of the schools in Goa use English as the medium of instruction and the schools are affiliated either to ICSE or CBSE board. The Directorate of Education in the Government of Goa at Panaji (headquarters) which is responsible for the administration and regulation of the education in schools is also instrumental in the implementation of the Compulsory Education Act (1995) and the Right to Education Act (2005). Don Bosco High School, Sharada Mandir School, Mary Immaculate Girls High School and St. Theresa Higher Secondary School are some of the popular schools of Goa.

Higher Education in Goa

The most important place pf higher education in Goa is the University of Goa. Today Goa University,is a university of affiliated colleges, 55 of which are distributed across Goa, 30 in general education, 25 in professional education. Most of the colleges in Goa offer courses in arts, commerce, science, hotel management, law, fisheries, architecture, marine engineering, , and pharmacy. The National Centre for Antacrtic and Ocean Research (NCAOR),Vasco-da-Gama and the National Institute of Oceanography (NIO), Dona Paula are scientific oceanographic laboratories offering training for further studies and research in affiliation with universities like Goa University.
